Harvest avignon fr

A marking event in the cycle of the vines! For the vintners, it represents the accomplishmentof a year’s work.

Le Bandes Vendanges, Avignon

Like every year, the beginning of the harvest is officially being proclaimed in a convivial and festive way with the so-called “Ban des Vendanges” in Avignon, capital of Côtes du Rhône – wines, the last Saturday of August or first of September.

In the ever-present quest for quality, the “Ban des Vendanges” was a momentous occasion indeed. There were two reasons behind having to wait for the proclamation. First, it was a way of guaranteeing that the grapes were ripe enough, and secondly, it meant that all the growers would begin to harvest at the same time, avoiding the risk of stealing from another’s vineyards. In the Middle-Ages, it allowed the collection and control of the dîme tax.

Today, it is above all an opportunity to celebrate at the end of the summer on the eve of a period of intense and stressful work that will determine the quality of the current vintage.

This year the Ban des Vendanges is scheduled on 31 August 2013.

From 4pm: on the Place du Palais des Papes, a procession of Bacchic brotherhoods in their traditional costumes, the harvest of the “Pope’s vines”, on the Rocher des Doms, the pressing of the grapes on the Place du Palais and a huge Provencal banquet. In the evening, one can just buy a glass of wine to enjoy a free tasting of all wines proposed on the stands, and buy a plate of cold cuts, cheeses or other local produce to match it. Tables and music animation at the Rocher des Doms.

Artists’ Wine Harvest in Cairanne: Travelling exhibition of grape-harvest crates

A completely new original concept: some thirty grape-harvest crates entrusted by the winegrowers of Cairanne to artists and Fine Arts students for creative experiments.

The idea from the start was to create an event during the wine harvest, a very busy period for vintners. This festive moment is full of emotion, between the joy of harvesting the fruit of a year’s work and the stress of weather forecasts. To express this atmosphere in concrete terms, the Syndicat des Vignerons de Cairanne imagined adding colour to the crates all winegrowers use. The grape crates were entrusted to artists and students from the Fine Arts Schools of Nîmes and Angers. Unused to working with metal, equipped with spray cans and brushes, they soon adapted to the support, corrugated iron, wooden slats and rust. Some found inspiration in Nature, others in Greek mythology, yet others worked in the idea of ‘Exquisite Corpses’ borrowed from Surrealism... This yielded the display of some thirty brightly coloured crates on the village square fromearly September, for an exceptional opening around the work of these vintner-artist pairs.
